NewScape Design was engaged by Parks Victoria to develop the Campgrounds Design and Facilities Manual, establishing a consistent framework for planning and delivering campground facilities across Victoria’s diverse park landscapes.
Building on lessons learned through the NSW National Parks Facilities Manual, the project translated best practice design principles into a Victorian context, ensuring facilities respond to local landscapes, cultural values and operational requirements. A series of regional workshops undertaken throughout the project ensured the manual reflected the needs of on-ground staff and park users, while a dedicated Working Group representing Visitor Experience, Asset Management, Universal Design, Managing Country Together and Capital Works guided the development of standards aligned with Parks Victoria’s operational values.
The manual streamlines facility selection by reducing unnecessary variation and promoting standardised, modular solutions that support procurement efficiencies while maintaining flexibility across park settings. As part of this work, NewScape Design developed concept designs for a bespoke modular shelter and toilet suite, utilising standardised structural frames with adaptable wall and roofing materials to respond to differing landscape, heritage and cultural contexts.
The resulting manual provides clear guidance on campground planning principles, levels of service and facility selection, supporting consistent, high-quality visitor experiences across Victoria’s park network while ensuring facilities remain practical, durable and responsive to place.
