The vision for a continuous, high-quality coastal hike through Murramarang National Park—linking Batemans Bay to Bawley Point—was first championed by the Shoalhaven Bushwalking Advisory Group. In December 2016, NewScape Design was commissioned by the Office of Environment and Heritage to plan the proposed route and prepare a Track and Facilities Upgrade Concept Report. This initial feasibility and concept design work was instrumental in securing funding for the implementation of the walk, providing a clear and compelling framework for future investment.
Murramarang National Park offers an exceptional setting for a multi-day walking experience, with its dramatic coastline, diverse and largely pristine landscapes, and strong Aboriginal cultural heritage. The park’s relatively gentle topography makes the walk accessible to a broad range of users, while existing accommodation options in nearby villages support a flexible, village-to-village hiking model.
Following track upgrades, the Murramarang South Coast Walk was delivered as a four-day hike, with daily distances of approximately 8–12 kilometres, while also creating a network of shorter day-walk opportunities for visitors staying along the route. Since opening in 2023, the walk has become a highly popular multi-day hiking experience, particularly appealing to those newer to hiking, and is now recognised as a standout example of accessible, well-supported coastal walking in New South Wales.
