Set within the World Heritage–listed Gondwana Rainforest, the Minyon Falls Visitor Precinct and Lookout reimagines how people experience one of northern NSW’s most spectacular natural landmarks. NewScape Design was engaged to deliver a sensitive, inclusive and culturally informed upgrade that allows nature to remain the hero.
A universally accessible boardwalk gently leads visitors from the car park through lush rainforest and along Repentance Creek, revealing quiet pools and shaded picnic spaces before arriving at a dramatic cantilevered lookout. Carefully set back from the cliff edge, the lookout offers breathtaking views across Minyon Falls as it plunges more than 100 metres over ancient rhyolite cliffs formed by the Tweed Volcano—making this powerful landscape accessible to visitors of all abilities.
The precinct acts as a gateway to a wider network of walking tracks, encouraging exploration and dispersing visitors throughout the region to support sustainable, nature-based tourism while reducing pressure on nearby culturally significant sites.
In response to the site’s deep cultural significance and more recent safety concerns, the project required a compassionate and thoughtful design approach. Working closely with Traditional Owners and specialist consultants, NewScape integrated suicide-prevention best practice and subtle interpretive messaging into the landscape—seeking to protect life, support healing, and restore balance to Country.
NewScape’s role included early cultural consultation, preparation of the interpretation brief, and delivery of detailed design and construction documentation. The precinct was completed and officially opened in November, offering a place where accessibility, care for Country and immersive natural experience come together.
