Middle Head – Gubbuh Gubbuh is a striking coastal headland set among the open spaces and beaches of Sydney Harbour, celebrated for its rare combination of natural beauty and cultural heritage. Together with neighbouring Georges Head, the area forms a landscape of exceptional significance, offering a sense of retreat and release from urban Sydney through its largely undeveloped, low-key character. As part of the broader Sydney Harbour Scenic Walk, the Middle Head – Gubbuh Gubbuh Walking Track was conceived to enhance access and visitation while carefully protecting the qualities that make this place unique.
NewScape Design led the development of a sensitive and feasible walking track alignment, responding to complex site constraints including cultural and heritage values, accessibility requirements, management boundaries and challenging topography. The route was shaped to connect the headlands through a sequence of new bridges and lookout points, creating clear moments to pause, orient and experience expansive views across Sydney Harbour, Middle Harbour and out to the Heads. As part of this work, NewScape also completed the detailed design and documentation of key visitor nodes, including The Belvedere and Defensive Ditch lookouts, carefully integrated to interpret the site’s layered defence and military history while balancing safety, conservation requirements and landscape character.
Working closely with interpretation consultants, NewScape integrated wayfinding and interpretive elements seamlessly into the walking track experience. Visual materials and a promotional video were developed to communicate the proposed journey and support engagement with stakeholders and the wider community, ensuring the walking track experience was clearly understood and supported from concept through to delivery.
