The Evans Lookout Access Upgrade in the Blue Mountains National Park delivers an inclusive and accessible natural experience while honouring the site’s cultural and historic significance. NewScape Design led the concept design, detailed design, and tender documentation to create an approach that balanced modern accessibility standards with the lookout’s distinctive character.
Carefully planned pathways, designed as on-ground full cut bench tracks, follow the contours of the landscape, reducing the need for intrusive structures and ensuring minimal impact on Country. Natural materials—sandstone, timber and coloured concrete—were selected to blend seamlessly into the surrounding environment while offering durability and sensory richness. Heritage paving and stonework were retained and interwoven with new elements, enabling visitors of all abilities to access the stunning views without compromising the lookout’s historic fabric.
This project demonstrates NewScape’s commitment to universal design principles, sustainable practice, and the power of landscape architecture to foster connection. By opening up one of Australia’s most iconic views to all visitors, the Evans Lookout upgrade stands as a legacy project—restoring inclusivity, enhancing visitor experience, and inspiring future generations to value and protect our natural heritage.
