Located adjacent to Melbourne Airport, the CSL Banksia Development supports Seqirus’ specialised vaccine and antivenom production and research facilities. The project required a landscape response that balanced the functional needs of a highly technical facility with the creation of a meaningful and welcoming external environment for staff and visitors.
NewScape Design prepared development application documentation and led the landscape concept, detailed design and construction documentation for the site, working closely with the project team to deliver a landscape integrated with the ambitions of a Green Star-rated building. The landscape design embeds Indigenous interpretation throughout the site, using endemic planting and landscape elements to provide habitat for native species while sharing stories of traditional medicinal plants connected to Country.
A site-specific artwork by Indigenous artist Kent Morris forms a central part of the project narrative, with paving patterns translating elements of the artwork into the public realm, carrying the design language from within the building into the surrounding landscape. The result is a landscape that not only supports the operational needs of the facility but also creates a culturally meaningful and ecologically responsive setting.
